Backing up on OS X

Well, I’ve finally begun a scheduled backup routine.  Four years since Switching and I experienced my first hardware failure, and it was fortunately minor, though a major headache to fix.  A folder on my main hard drive had something corrupted, and Disk Utility’s First Aid couldn’t fix it, even after running three times from my install DVD.

DiskWarrior is the app that finally fixed it, in which after 9 hours of me struggling, DiskWarrior proudly proclaimed: “DiskWarrior has easily found and fixed your files and directories.” Despite the fact that a backup would not have helped in this situation (the disk would have needed repair before I could overwrite the corrupt folder), it did give me serious pause.

So, after much reading and research, I have chosen the aptly named SuperDuper!.  It gives me a bootable backup, no need for any proprietary software to access or restore my data in the event of a problem, incremental backups, “Sandboxing”, and even some powerful scripting capabilities.  All for $27.95.
