Battlestar Galactica - Free, Legal

Thanks to Boing Boing: SciFi.com is making the first episode of the very excellent new Battlestar Galactica series available online.  In fact, the episode (titled “33” and one of my favorite of the series so far) is available completely uncut and commercial free.  Plus, there are four deleted scenes!

Unfortunately (you knew there was a downside, right?), there isn’t an easy way to download the episode (or clips) and they’re only available in the universally-derided “realplayer” format.  Thankfully, you can skip installing the adware-laden “Real Player” and instead go hit Real Alternative.  That is, if you’re on Windows.  I haven’t found any OS X alternatives yet…

Er...didn’t you find the ad-stripped version of RealPlayer over a year ago?

Well, yeah.  But I still just don’t really trust Real very much.  So, if there’s some OS X equivalent to “Real Alternative” then I’d prefer that.

Oh, well I think djoPlayer will do that.  I’d link the developer’s page, but it’s in French.

That’s an awesome show. I don’t have cable so I didn’t even know there was a remake. Still not going to pony up for cable but I’ll have to go get the mini-series dvd. I take it the online episode comes after the mini-series?

Anyway, thanks for the link.

Indeed, the first episode ("33") takes place after the miniseries.  In fact, it takes place immediately after the miniseries.  Technically, this is also a “reimagining” of the series rather than a “remake”.  There are some notable differences from the original (like, say, Starbuck is a woman [grin]).

If you’re interested in seeing the other episodes (grabbing the miniseries on DVD is an excellent idea!) then they can be found *cough* on bittorrent *cough*.  I’ve grabbed all 13 episodes so far simply for archiving since I haven’t even watched them—I’m watching the episodes as they’re aired here in the US.  (The first 13 episodes were aired already over in the UK, so they’ve already seen them all while we’re only up to number 8 here.)

Thanks for the heads up. “Archiving” is in progress and the mini-series is on order.
