Build your Own “TiVo”

I saw some references recently to the Linux-based MythTV software.  It’s the software and UI behind a computer-based PVR similar to TiVo or ReplayTV.  Wired now has an article up about how people are building their own PVR using the software.

Now, I’m a huge fan of my TiVo.  It seriously rocks.  But I can’t help but admire the interface of MythTV as well as some of it’s features such as support for multiple tuners, PiP, basic video editing, archival to VCD, distributed architecture for multiple machines, etc.

I may just have to give this a try with my old computer…

I’m interested to know whether or not you ever gave this a try.  From what I’ve read, using a TiVo is much easier and cheaper considering the fact that you should have a decent machine....

I still use my TiVo and as cheesy as it sounds, I don’t know what I’d do without it.  Seriously, whenever I’m at someone else’s house and I miss something on TV, I always reach for the remote to rewind it.  Once you try, you just can’t go back.

I never really built my own PVR, but I do have a video capture/tuner card in my computer and I use it with Snapstream.  It works great as a sort of a backup.  It’s also conventient in that I can archive the recordings by burning them to CD or DVD.
