CD Settlement Rebates Sent

Woohoo!  Back in 2000, a whole host of states filed suit against the five main music distributers and three retail chains regarding price fixing.  Well, the $144 million settlement finally got approved (they admit no wrong-doing, of course).  If you were one of the the roughly 3.5 million people who registered to say that you bought :CD:s, records, or cassettes between 1995 and 2000, then your check for $13.86 should be on its way.

Of course, the immediate irony here is that $13.86 won’t even buy a single CD in most cases.  Figures: Big Media wins again…

Woot!  Rochelle and I both registered in time, so we can spend that $27.72 on a DVD or something.

Speak of the devil, I got two checks in the mail today!

Dear Illinois Music Purchaser:

Whether you filed your claim online at the settlement web site, http://www.MusicCDSettlement.com, or by mail, the attached payment represents full payment of your portion of the Settlement.  Please note that the attached payment instrument must be cashed by may 20, 2004.

It is a pleasure to bring this matter to a satisfactory conclusion and to return value to consumers who purchased CDs while the challenged pricing policies were in effect.
