Dialect Survey Mapped!

Yeah, exciting headline, I know.  In the vein of Chris’s recent commonly mispronounced words entry, I bring you (courtesy PA), the Harvard University Dialect Survey.  It maps alternate pronunciations of words and where people say them, and questions such as the quintessential: ”What is your generic term for a sweetened carbonated beverage?”.

Duh.  It’s a Coke.  As in, give me an Orange Coke. Pssht.

There’s a Yankee or Dixie? quiz available based off this survey.

I took it a while ago; I think I got something like 70% Dixie, which seemed odd since quite a number of my individual answers turned out to be—according to the survey—“yankee” answers. [shrug]

Ditto that.  Almost everything I said was from the Great Lakes region (minus the Cheese Head’s “bubbler"), and I’m 67% Dixie.

Of course, it also said that two of the words I use are predominately Texan. wink

Pffff....
The Yankee/Dixie test is broken.

66% (Dixie). A definitive Southern score!

I am 100% central New York… Ivy League town, German/Pensylvania Dutch parentage.

66% Dixie my Union-ass wink

Stop lying to yourself, Jose!  You know you’re one of us southern boys deep down inside.  C’mon… you know you want it!

Yeeeee-HAAWWWWWW! Lemme far up the Genr’l Lee an we’ll go buzz ‘ol Boss Hog! :D
