First Extrasolar Non-Gas Giant Planet Found

Space.com’s report of a planet with a probable iron core and a silicon mantle should be getting me excited more than I actually am. The fact that I blogged it here is somewhat of a proof that I did give the news a second thought, instead of ignoring it outright. But I can tell you if this was 10 years ago, I would have jumped 10 feet high, fired roman candles at the neighbors’ windows (and pets) in excitement and called up several of my friends for a heated discussion about it. We’d talk about what sort of life forms that could evolve there considering its approximate 7G gravity, how long before we’d send a multi-generation expedition to the star system 15 light years away, and would there be life on moons of its two companion gas giants.

Upon reading the news, I’ve just realized that all I had was one whoopee! and the obligatory Well, gosh. I have to blog this, and finally Okay, it’s time to pick up my wife from work… that’s all. I wonder if this lack of wonder on my part is caused by age, important real life matters, or just that I have nothing to talk about on the subject these days? In years to come, would I regard things like the cure for cancer and the launching of a manned Mars mission with a yawn?
