How to select a URI

URIs (that is, the server/path combination you type into a browser to find something) should be easy to remember, logical, and persistent. This is always something I’ve “sort of” thought about.  I dislike going to a page that no longer exists or to a really long and difficult path.  I’ve also realized how important (and difficult) it is to choose a good domain name.  What I haven’t done, though, is really thought about how to accomplish these things and how to make sure that you plan for the future with it.  Check out this article on the W3C site about creating good URIs.  This is definitely something I’ll have to consider in the future…

Cool article, although I dont understand the difference between a URI and a URL and a URN and all those other UR*’s they were talking about in that article.

URI = Uniform Resource Identifier
URL = Uniform Resource Locator

A URL is just a specific type of URI.  In most instances people will use URI to mean the same thing as URL, though in reality it’s a more generic term that can cover other types of things besides web addresses.
