IE, Mozilla, and the Future

Microsoft has now announced that there will be no new stand-alone versions of IE and that the next update will be bundled with the next OS: “Longhorn”.

Understandably, this was both a fairly low-key announcement and has also caused quite a stir in the web development community.  Zeldman has a great overview that explains why this is such an important issue.  There’s also a very good discussion going on over at web-graphics in the comments.  Dave, of mezzoblue, suggests that instead of a massive campaign reminicent of the Browser Upgrade Campaign, we should instead essentially ramp up for a huge marketing effort.  I tend to agree with Dave’s assessment and hope that something about this genuinely gets started.  I know I’ll certainly support it however I can.

In the meantime people, try upgrading to a browser that works better than IE.
