Is Unbox Undesirable?
Over at Boing Boing, Cory Doctorow has a nice post that disects some of the legalese used in the Terms of Service for Amazon’s new “Unbox” service that (supposedly) lets you buy or rent movies digitally.
Section 5: From time to time, Amazon will automatically deliver promotional video content (e.g., movie trailers, celebrity interviews, reviews, etc.) to your Authorized Device. Amazon may automatically delete such promotional video content from your Authorized Device without notice to you.
We will put commercials on your computer without your permission. But you can’t keep the good ones.
The post is a bit long, but it definitely confirms for me that I have zero interest in “buying” any sort of movie from Unbox. Of course, none of this should really be surprising at all. After all, it’s simply another example of how much contempt the media companies have for their customers.
