John Woo and… Metroid?

Word on the street (well, okay, it’s actually on websites, not on the street) is that legendary director John Woo has optioned the rights to make a movie based on the video game series “Metroid”.  I never really got into the Metroid games primarily, I suppose, simply because I never really had Nintendo systems.  I’ve played some of the early games in the past, though, and they were certainly lots of fun.  Still, I’m really interested to see how someone can make Metroid into a feature-length movie.

For anyone who isn’t a huge John Woo fan, you need to immediately go out and rent (or better yet buy) yourself copies of The Killer and Hard Boiled.  John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat together are an awesome combination for insanely cool gunfights.

Metroid is one of my favorite franchises, having played every iteration except for one of the new Gameboy titles.

I’m not sure how I feel about Woo handling franchise material, though, regardless of the quality of those two films.  He ruined another favorite franchise of mine: Mission Impossible.

That said, if the film gets made, I want Lucy Liu to play Samas Aran.  Yes, Chris, I know you don’t like her, but you have to admit that it would be a great choice and setup Woo for the potential to match his better work.

Metroid on Gameboy was the funnest game EVER!

I totally disagree with you. Lucy Lui would be a poor choice. Samus Aran is a blonde femine, so I think someone elese should get the honours. I am thinking about Uma Thurman (Kill Bill, does all here stunts herself), Nyomi Watts (21 Grams) or someone else I can’t think off now. As long as it is not Britney Spears, I am happy.

About the franchise, I feel the sames as you Derek. John Woo could do a great job, but also a really poor one. Fact is that his good movies Killer, Hard Boiled are totally different compared to Metroid. I would have preferred Ridley Scott or Steven Spielberg to handle this one.

At the end, Metroid was inspired by the Alien franchises, so a Ridley Scott Metroid Movie would be kinda cool.
Also, there is not much hand-to-hand combat in the Metroid franchise, none at all, so I am unsure how John Wow will change the story. At the end, he is the master of stunts and hand-to-hand.

We’ll see, I am glad that the franchise is adopted to a movie anyway.
Good promotion for Nintendo.

I think Woo’s gun battles are more pleasing than his hand-to-hand work, so that doesn’t bother me that much.

As far as Samus being a blond?  It’s kind of a blondish-green mop at the end of the NES version, and later versions have been very careful to not really personify Samus more clearly.  Besides, have you not seen Lui as a blond?  Mmm.....

I do totally agree though.  Ridley Scott should be making this movie if anyone.  And I’d be fine with a stunt man playing Samus, leaving on the helmet the whole movie.  Then they could pick someone with voice talent like they did for Vader.  A reveal at the end taking off her helmet and shaking her hair would be so true to the game that I think it would be a great way to go.

I am a12 year old kid (don’t laugh!) and have played and completed all of the Metroid games and i think they would be better off with my suggestion ! I think nether Lucy Liu or Uma Thurman Should be Samas Aran, Keira Knightley should be the bounty huntey , and the director should Andy Wachowski.Derek Jones has a good idea about her taking off her helmet and shaking her hair.

I’d never argue with Keira starring in any movie that I want to see.

i think the movie going to be great!  :D

.......if it comes out......
y is’nt eny1 posting.... :(

im scared about this one. if john woo screws this up errrr......... I just want this movie to be true to the game. i DONT want to see samus as a slut sleeping with everyone. i could never play a metroid the same way if that happend.
