Listen, Print, Share

Apple has released the new Airport Express, a nifty palm-sized wireless extension of the Airport Extreme Base Station.  Yes, cards, and other full-size wireless routers can extend the range or provide additional wireless and wired access points to your network like this can; but the Airport Express also adds a USB port for printer sharing, and an audio jack that works seamlessly with iTunes to play your library through the home speakers of your choice.  Cool!

thats pretty damned nifty. i like the idea of of extending digital media to all of the home, as well as print sharing wirelessly, though i do think the optimum home for myself would have gigabit AND wirelss.

The Airport Extreme Base Station has a USB for printer sharing, which I use with my laser.  Allows Rochelle to print from the living room without me actually having to “share” the printer via my computer or with a dedicated print server router box thingamajig.  This could be handy and cheap for a small office that has multiple non-LAN printers in different rooms or cubicles that need sharing.

If I weren’t broke as all get out, I’d snatch one of these in a heartbeat and plug it behind my entertainment center.  iTunes for my stereo, and I’d finally be able to use XBOX Live that automatically got paid for in January.

ArsTechnica has an article/review up on this.  (Gracias to the great AnandTech site for the link.)

It certainly does sound pretty cool.

Why not get a $14 cord and run it to your air-port from your x-box, unplugging it when not needed and tucking it behind the TV?

Yeah, a 38 foot cord for $14?

i dont see hopw you need 38ft if your only going to use it when your using xbox live… then roll it away, if you want it to set hidden how about this?

um oook, why does my url autmoaticly link to this same page eventhough i made it for this…

link

> i dont see hopw you need 38ft if your only going to use it when your using xbox live

Distance from Xbox to Airport Base Station… 38ft, perhaps?  That would kind of necessitate having a cord that long in order to be able to use Live.

> why does my url autmoaticly link to this same page eventhough i made it for this

Because you put quotes around the URL when you did the pMcode.  I fixed it.

(what i meant was i dont think the base station to the tv is 38ft rasberry)
and i guess im too used to VB code, rather than pmachine.

It’s 38 feet.

straight lines or around the corner?

back to the original subject, do you think this unit will have fast enough connection times to get the full effect of your internet speed? Ive used d-links 2x 802.11b and was not satisfied with the results even at top speed. then again this IS apple, and it IS thier version of 802.11g, so i might just be that much better

Yeah, it’s just as fast as an AEBS.  I don’t think comparing any company’s 802.11b with any 802.11g is fair.

It is funny to mention though, as I’ve seen a lot of articles talking about this device being Apple’s terrific contribution to the growing world of wi-fi.  Apple was the first to start the wi-fi revolution, offering affordable wireless networking with the first Base Station back in 1999.  They didn’t come up with a cool word like “Centrino” though, so nobody thinks they did anything.

note: centrino is not a cool word

note2: intel sux

note3: to lazy to google aebs, whats that?

note4: will the latency of ANY wireless be good for the ping needs of gameing on broadband?

note5: just realized what aebs means.

Well, considering that I game online on my G5, and I don’t use a wired connection, I’m going to go with yes… In fact, you’re the first person I’ve even hear that considers that it wouldn’t be.  There are certainly thousands and thousands of broadband gamers using wireless connections already.  Again--1999....this isn’t exactly bleeding edge technology.

affordable wireless 802.11g is new, not the format.

I can’t quickly agree that there are thousands, and thousands of gamers with wireless broadband. its just not neccessary unless they have laptops or live with mom and dad, and mom and dad dont want wires all over the house.

I will however agree that its on the rise, especially with more reliable and faster equipment getting cheaper.

(i cant imagine why your g5 doesnt have the base station next to it..Why bother with wireless on all the machines?)

Any word on how the wireless tune sharing will work? there would have to be some sort of interface somewhere, if only just to choose the song you want to hear.

Dude, I guarantee you that thousands and thousands of gamers are using wireless connections and gaming, both with their PCs and XBOX’s and PS2s.  It’s not about whether is necessary.  It’s about convenience.

My base station IS right next to my G5.  Why do I choose wireless?  One less cord to clutter, and I can keep my ethernet port disabled.  In a microfashion, I’m sure that’s saving some heat, as it’s situated in a hotter area of the case than the airport antenna.

My opinion is why bother with wired?  As to the latency, even of older 802.11 flavors---people still play games on dialup, and still do just fine.

As for how you control the tunes, just go to the link in my original post, it shows how everything is controlled.

i meant, was there anyway to controll it from the stero itself, kinda sucks when you HAVE to have your laptop arround to controll it… worse when youve got to run from room to room to controll the music.

Though, you do have an imac in the living room

Well, I’d probably use a playlist.  Smart playlist or a combination of smart playlists along with Party Shuffle would be able to reasonably give me quite a few hours of music without needing any intervention from me.

But yes, it would be nice for some direct control.  Here’s hoping that Apple comes up with a remote control that will somehow interface with the Express.  The cheap and easy way out would be to make one with a USB receiver and plug it in that way.  The max cool way would be to send iTunes software control signals over the wi-fi directly to the Express.

max cooler, would be to have a remote that was also wifi that controlled it as well as showed all song choices as well as movie file choices

couldnt you do that with your palm or something?

GET TO IT!

Sounds like a job for a new and improved iPod.  Built in Wi-Fi---could either control your desktop’s library, or the currently loaded songs on the iPod…

HMMM that would be a massive improvment, i dont think i want ti pay over $400 for an mp3 player unless its got some serious quirks. Built in APE would seal the deal for me much faster than now. Though in trough, i do want an ipod as it is.

Er...I hope you mean “perks”?

Indeed i did, i aslo meant truth rather than trough.  On most days i type to fast for my own good.
