My Henson Fascination

One of the things we are doing here at the house in preparation for our trip to New Zealand in three weeks, is to have a large yard sale.  It will be the first time in our six years of marriage that we part with any of the things we have accumulated.  Chris will be the first to tell you--we have a lot of useless tchotchke.

One large box alone is full of VHS tapes.  Needless to say, I don’t ever watch anything on VHS anymore, except for the original Star Wars Trilogy from time to time.  There are a few more recent videos that we own, either before DVD really caught on and became affordable, or for movies that we really liked that hadn’t come out on DVD yet.

A lump formed in my throat as I put The Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal into the box.  I stopped what I was doing, went to Amazon, and promptly ordered the DVD Box set.  Interestingly, yesterday when I picked up Robota by Doug Chiang and Orscon Scott Card, Amazon made a recommendation for another Jim Henson DVD that I had totally forgotten about--and I can’t wait for it to come in: The Storyteller series.

Needless to say, I’m a huge fan of Jim Henson’s non-Muppet films and projects (Farscape included.) I really would like to see Brian Henson and crew do a few more of these now that I’m an adult.  Is Brian Froud even still alive?  If so, he definitely needs to be in on the project.

To complete this useless romp through my nostalgia, I also did some other practical DVD replacements: Fifth Element, Ever After, The Princess Bride, Holy Grail, and a few others that I still hadn’t gotten around to replacing.

First off, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen the word ”tchotchke”.  Still can’t figure out how to pronounce it…

Yeah, you’ve got a lot of stuff (so do I, actually), but it pales next to my sister.  Man, she definitely inherited the “pack rat” gene in my family.

I’ve still got a few VHS tapes, too.  Most of the ones I actually care about (and can’t replace) are recordings from TV or other sources.  Once I get my DVD burner in I plan to look into getting a video input device so that I can transfer all that stuff onto :DVD:s.  Oh, and speaking of DVDs… I have way too many.

It’s pronounced “CHAWCH-kee”.  I think I first picked the word up in the video game industry, as it’s what all of the trade shows call the junk every booth wants to throw in your bag.  Keychains, stickers, strange looking pencils, etc.  The coolest one I ever got was a keychain about two years before the first Rainbow Six game came out--it was a thirty caliber bullet with the logo on the side, and a small metal chain loop to use it like a keychain.  The word was reinforced by my wife, who I think picked it up working at Pier One Imports.

Speaking of DVD collections, I was wondering how you’d feel about me adding my own DVDs into that blog.  Since you’re already using categories for the genres, I’m sure it would take some sort of hack to split ours into two unique lists, and I’m not sure if it’s worth the trouble.
