NET SEND Your Way to a Suspension

Thirteen year old Carl Grimmer (a fellow Texan, I might add) enjoys learning about computers and how they work from his techie parents.  Among other things, they showed him DOS and it’s old NET SEND command.  It can be used to send short messages to other computers in a network and might be considered a precursor to modern IMing.

So during one of his computer classes, Carl innocently used NET SEND to send the message “Hey!” to another computer.  Unfortunately, he accidentally sent it to the entire network, which consisted of about 80 computers at the school.  Innocent mistake that’s harmless, right?  I’d think so.

His principal, however, decided that Carl’s simple action warranted a three day suspension.  How bogus is that?

HA! Stupid fucking school. I can’t wait until this kid goes to college and gets to actually learn, instead of working under these under-educated LOSERS they’re calling teachers. My experiance in public school has been something similar. Hell i remember once when i argued with a teacher, a science teacher now… about how many centemeters were in an inch. She said..10… it was half the class against the other half… one half was on my side...saying “uh, its 2.58 ma’am… here, ill find proof, have a ruler?” she still insisted it was 10… stupid bitch. It hurts my feelings that she even has a job. Oh yeah, this same woman taught reading that year. Dearing the reading of “Treasure Island” she kept talking about these ‘lahnd loobers’, i piped in and said, “are you trying to say ‘land luber’?”.. she got mad, and continued to butchern the english language along with poor R.L. Stevenson’s masterpeice. Stupid bitch.

Carl is the man.

(I could not reproduce the ‘net send’ function on my network with windows xp. Could it be like most schools, that they are using outdated crap? )

ugh Dearing should = During

Wow.  That’s like suspending someone for accidentally spilling their milk on the cafeteria floor.

HA!, i e-mailed ol’ Carl at the site provided by his dad. Heres what he had to say.

thanks for the email it was cool
P.S. richland middle school sucks

i like this kid

ummm greg.... I may be wrong, but aren’t there 2.54 centimeters in an inch?

I think zero tolerance policies are what’s to blame here more than anything. Which makes no sense really. I mean shouldn’t someone who is a teacher be tolerant of someone they are teaching? Zero tolerance towards adolescents implies (IMHO) an omniscience of intent. Simply, these kids are growing up and learning about the world around them everyday and moment. Zero tolerance seems to say “Hey! You should know better about anything and everything at anytime! - And - You are not allowed to make mistakes!”. I think those policies are geared towards criminalizing our youth. This is definetly the age of accusation and defamation. That’ll “teach” em.

ummm greg.… I may be wrong, but aren’t there 2.54 centimeters in an inch?

Probably. The main point was that there is NOT 10 centemeters in an inch, and a teacher who supposedly went to college didn’t know this, and i who was in 6th grade had it as common knowledge.

ok.  wink

I was working for a company based in florida in 2003 named supra telecom (supratelecom.com) they fired 6 guys who used net send. and that is a fact.

I did the same net send thing before! I started off sending messages to my friends.... looked a little deeper and learnt how to send it to the entire room. It was one of the last days of the year so I didn’t think anyone in the year was doing any real work or would mind. Little did I know the entire school was recieving the message, including the office assisstants, the principal and all of the faculties.

It screwed up a teachers trying to finialise student reports. Several of them came storming into the room demanding to know who was responsible. Luckily the teacher in the room was nice enough not to point me out, only to assure that it wouldn’t happen again. No three day suspension though!
