No Wally World for Oakland
Oakland, California has succeeded in stopping Walmart from entering the city.
I have honestly not formulated an opinion as to whether or not I think that Walmart is good or bad. It provides jobs, and makes products readily accessible at low prices. Do I think that small businesses can provide the same goods? Yes. Can they do it for the same price? Mostly no. Is the extra money spent giving the consumer some benefit that Walmart does not? Mostly no. Are the products as readily accessible and available? Mostly no. Does it put small businesses out of jobs? I don’t know.
To make it mathematical--is the sum of the benefits to society greater than or less than the sum of the benefits of letting small business owners handle it all?
Too much for me to think or care about. The reason I bring it up is that I did the art for 20,000 bumper stickers for a large organization’s campaign to help get this measure passed. Whether I agree with it or not, I think that’s pretty darn cool.

Our community blocked Walmart as well, causing my wife to bitch profusely, and me to question the legality of stopping a business from operating where they please. We have exactly one option presently: Target.
