It is wrong, actually. Photoshop was originally called BarneyScan. It was scanning software written by Thomas Knoll.
An interview with an early Adobe employee reveals that Photoshop was originally created due to the Star Wars movies! The software was created at the request of John Knoll who was in charge of special effects. He wanted something “to add effects and painting tools to images”.
