Poor Weiland

Weiland (that’s my roommate’s dog) got out of the backyard this afternoon.  I discovered this (or, should I say, “was informed of this") when the next door neighbors knocked on the door asking, “Is this your dog?” I was, of course, quite surprised to see him out front surrounded by a bunch of people.  It seems he must have forced the fence gate open on one side of the house and “escaped” from the backyard.

Read on for details and some funny pictures.

The neighbors informed me that they’d chased Weiland for quite some ways around the neighborhood before finally catching him and getting him back here.  Today was another hot day (it was probably near 100 °F at that point) and Weiland was seriously overheating from his little escapade.  I thanked the neighbors and brought him inside (and later went and put a large, heavy pot in front of the gate door so that he couldn’t repeat his escape).

Once he got inside he promptly laid down on the carpet and tried to cool off with some heavy panting.  After filling his water bowl, I came back to check on him and noticed some light blood spots on the carpet.  Investigating a bit, I discovered that during the course of his adventure, he’d done a lot of running on the hot pavement and had torn up some of the pad on all four of his paws.  Some had some sizeable chunks missing and others had the outer part of the pad separating away, but all four of his paws had some damage.

Once he cooled off enough to get up, he limped over and promptly lapped up the entire bowl of water.  I tried to clean up his paws some but there really wasn’t a whole lot I could do.  My roommate came home not too long after that to a very interesting tale.

He apparently did some research on the internet and one place said to clean up the pads and then put socks on his paws.  So, that’s what my roommate did.  The result is… comical!

(Excuse the crappy quality, but I only had my camera phone handy.)

Yikes, that was some adventure to hurt his feet so badly!  Hope the socks work out.
