Roller Derby
Last weekend, I went to see a roller derby match and had the most fun I’ve experienced in quite a while. The match pitted the ‘Rhinestone Cowgirls’ against the ‘Putas del Fuego’ (how can you not like that name?) and included such roller girls as “Redd Foxie”, “Venis Envy”, and “Rollergasm”. You just know it’s going to be a good time with team/girl names like that! I’d never seen a roller derby game previously, so I really wasn’t quite sure what to expect. It’s fast-paced, action-packed, and these ladies have no problems with starting a brawl with the other team that makes hockey look tame. If someone commits a foul, then they might get sent through “spank alley” or have to participate in a pillow fight. Clearly, this isn’t a typical day at your local skating rink.
So, now the question is how you can get in on this fun, right? Well, you could try catching an episode of the A&E show Rollergirls, which happens to feature the same league here in Austin that I watched. You could also see if one of the 147 other leagues listed on the TXRD website is close to you. Finally, the season one DVD of the A&E series is due to be released soon.
