TiVo Series3: HDTV, Baby!
This makes me excited. Oh yes, it definitely does. On display at CES this week is the forthcoming (mid-to-late 2006, apparently) TiVo Series3 box. MegaZone has the full post with info, but here are some highlights:
HTDV support. CableCARD support. Dual tuners (actually, 6 tuners [2 cable tuners, 2 ATSC tuners for high def over the air, and 2 regular old NTSC tuners], but you can only use 2 at any one time). External SATA hard drive support (to expand the storage; you won’t be able to use it to transfer content). Display on the box front to show you what’s recording. Revamped remote… with backlight! MPEG-4 playback support (still records in MPEG-2).
This thing darn near has me drooling. No word on price yet, but I would expect it to release at $500+, minimum. Still, a dual-tuner HDTV TiVo is going to seriously rock. It would finally let me justify to myself getting HDTV…

GearLive has a very cool hands-on video covering the TiVo Series3 demonstrated at CES. TiVo’s Bob Pony goes over a lot of the new features and explains things in a great twelve and a half minute clip.
