TiVoToGo Information

The much-anticipated TiVoToGo feature has been released.  A lot of people are still waiting for the service update for their TiVo box, but I happened to get mine a few days ago.  I immediately went and downloaded the “TiVo Desktop 2.0” (a requirement) and started setting things up.  Turns out that I had to turn a feature on via the TiVo.com website and thus had to wait a day before it filtered back to my box and I could start using it.

So, I finally got things working and I downloaded a couple of recordings off of TiVo onto my PC!  Took a long time to transfer (blame the 802.11b, I guess) but once it was on my computer I could immediately watch it with Windows Media Player.  Very cool.  I really haven’t done much else with it yet as I haven’t devoted much time to it beyond simply confirming that it worked for me.

In order to be able to burn your recorded shows to :DVD: you’re supposed to have to go buy a copy of a special Sonic program.  Ugh.  Never liked that company’s products.  Luckily, it looks like people are already figuring out how to convert the .tivo file into more useable formats.  That’s huge news.  Jason Levine says over on PVRBlog:

I suspect after another couple weeks of all these people poking and prodding their devices, we’ll see some simple one-click ways to get video off your TiVo, convert to MPEG, and edit out commercials.

I certainly hope that’s true.  I suspect that the Sonic method of burning the DVD won’t allow you to edit out commercials, so being able to do so yourself would definitely be cool.
