Two Men, Two Years, and a Bomb

We’re all rather scared today with Al Qaeda, terrorists, and “rogue” states.  Many people claim that Iraq, Iran, and North Korea all have looked in to how to create a nuclear weapon (or have done more than that).  But there’s still the question of just how difficult is it to create a nuclear weapon?

It seems that the US Army decided to find out back in the 1960s.  They took two young men with physics PhDs, gave them no access to classified information, and had them go about the task of trying “to design an explosive with a militarily significant yield”.  Two and a half years later, they succeeded.
