U.N. Landmine Commercial

Apparently, several networks in the US, including CNN, are declining to air a Public Service Announcement made for the United Nations.  The 60-second spot shows a youth soccer game being played when suddenly one of the players steps on and detonates a landmine.  The ad was created as part of the U.N.’s Stop Land Mines campaign.

I think this is a wonderfully conceived ad that really gets its message across.  You can view the video online or use the torrent to grab it via Bit Torrent and save them bandwidth.

That’s interesting, being that the U.S. is the last member state to not ban the use of land mines.  My mother (a former high school Spanish teacher) did cultural studies for grade school students.  She had the kids hide things out on the playground: dolls, toy parts, milk jug tops, etc.  Everyone at the school was told to bring it to Mrs. Jones if they found anything out on the playground.

At this point, she hadn’t told any of the kids why they were doing any of this.  She had a huge board, and when a student would turn in one of the items, she put their class photo onto the grid.  By the end of the week, the board was full of students, from first grade through fifth.  On the last day, she showed a film about land mines, how military groups disguised them to look innocuous, or even like children’s toys.  The board’s title was revealed, something to the effect of “Children Lost Due to Land Mines”.

Naturally, some parents were outraged.  The kids, however, all “got it”.
